The first world champions of this Olympic year will be revealed in Scotland next month and Athletics Canada today announced the nine athletes competing for the crown at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships, as well as 11 athletes who have been provisionally selected.

Meet Team Canada

The squad representing Canada March 1 to 3 in Glasgow, Scotland consists of five women and four men: Lucia Stafford, Simone Plourde, Mariam Abdul-Rashid, Alysha Newman, Sarah Mitton, Malachi Murray, Brendon Rodney, Kieran Lumb, and Charles Philibert-Thiboutot.

“This team is a mix of some younger athletes with some veterans. I think that bodes well,” said had coach Glenroy Gilbert. “It’s a very small team, but I think it will be a strong team. Sarah Mitton was the silver medalist last summer in Budapest. She’ll lead the squad with Alysha Newman, who won the Tour in pole vault last year.”

“World Indoor Championships is a fun test to see where we’re at with the training and al the work we’ve put in,” said Mitton. “With it being an Olympic year, my focus is set towards the Games, but it’s great to be able to be competitive and get into that competitive mindset this early in the season at an event like the World Indoor Championships.”
