GRN – Warm welcome for James, but Gardiner’s 44.26 NR stands out at Grenada Invite

ST. GEORGES, Grenada – The highlight of the successful staging of the inaugural Grenada International was when the country’s hero Kirani James won his 400m race in 45.44secs.

The fans had gone crazy when during the opening ceremony, the stadium was named after the former Olympic and World Champion. However, he was not the overall fastest, as Bahamian talent Steven Gardiner won the other race in World lead and National record 44.26.

The women 400 m hurdles also brought a World lead as Ashley Spencer was timed with 54.78 ahead of Jamaican Leah Nugent 54.88. Felicia Brown of the USA equaled the 200 m World lead with 22.60 (+1.0) win ahead of Tynia Gaither of Bahamas, 22.71 and Jamaicans Jura Levy, 22.88 and Veronica Campbell-Brown, 22.93.

Mike Rodgers (USA) clocked the fastest 100 m time when winning his race in 10.17 (+0.9) ahead of countryman, Isiah Young, 10.19 (41 year old Kim Collins 5th 10.28). Justin Gatlin did not run due to tightness in his quad. Asafa Powell won the other race in 10.18 (+0.7). LaShawn Merritt edged Canadian Brendon Rodney in the 200 m 20.42 (-1.0) to 20.45.

The women’s 100 m was wind-aided, won by Murielle Ahoure (CIV) 11.14 (+2.1) beating USA’s Morolake Akinosun 11.17 and Gayon Evans (JAM) also 11.17. Top hurdles times for Americans, Quincy Downing 48.80secs over 400mH and Sharika Nelvis 12.68 (+0.4) ahead of Queen Harrison 12.81 and Phylicia George 12.85 in the sprint obstacle.

The men’s 110m hurdles was windy (+3.0), winner Shane Brathwaite got 13.43. Nigerian Patience George topped women 400 m in 52.26.

In technical events favorite wins for Jamaican Damar Forbes 7.92m (-0.1) in long jump and St. Lucia’s Levern Spencer 1.88m in high jump.

Javelin winner Janeil Craigg achieved national record for Barbados 78.71.
