JAM – STETHS, Rusea’s are champions of West

St. Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) boys and Rusea’s girls were crowned champions of Western Champs on Saturday (18) at the Catherine Hall Sports Complex in Montego Bay, St. James.

Rusea’s finished the meet on 344.5 points to beat STETHS 272.5 and Petersfield 182.5. Mount Alvernia 179 and Mannings 142 rounded off the top five girl teams.

STETHS, on the boys’ side, ended with 365 points to beat Munro 260.5 and Petersfield 249.33, Cornwall College 221.33 and Rusea’s 144.5 completed the high five.

Sachin Dennis of STETHS, who won the Class 2 boys’ sprint double, was one of the stars of the meet. Dennis won the 100m final in 10.72 and the 200m in 21.52, just falling short of Darrion Bent’s 2006 record of 21.50.

Mount Alvernia’s duo of Kemba Nelson and Soyinne Grenyion were also sprint double winners. Nelson topped the Class 2 girls’ sprints with runs of 11.88 in the 100m and 24.36 over the 200m while Grenyion dominated the Class 3 finals in 12.09 and 24.79.

Green Island’s Class 3 boy Kalani Cook also secured 100/200 double on the day with times of 11.32 and 22.57.

Rushane Edwards of Munro won the Class 1 boys’ 200m in 21.34, and Rashawn Campbell of Cornwall, the Class 4 title in 23.94.

Debra Wallace of Herbert Morrison ran 24.52 to win the Class 1 girls’ 200m final, and Alexis James, the Class 4 event in 25.29.

Matthew Brown of Cornwall won the Class 1 boys 100m final in 10.56 while Kimone Hines took the girls’ equivalent in 11.95.
Roshane McLeod of STETHS was the winner of the Class 4 boys’ 100m final in 11.90.

Stacey-Ann Williams of STETHS, 54.60sec, and Leon Gordon of Rusea’s, 47.95sec, are the Class 1 girls’ and boys’ 400m champions, respectively.

The boys’ triple jump title went to Owayne Owens of Cornwall with a leap of 15.16 metres.

Rusea’s Myesha Nott topped the girls’ open triple jump final with a record 12.63m.
